MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial rather than nuclear DNA — one of a small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides identified only in the last decade or so. That origin is the point: it is a signal the mitochondria send to the rest of the cell, and to the nucleus, about energy status. It is commonly researched for its role in cellular metabolism — insulin signalling, glucose handling and fat metabolism in particular — and for the overlap between the pathways it acts on and those switched on by exercise, which is where much of the current interest sits. Ageing and metabolic-stress models are further lines of inquiry. Supplied as 10mg of freeze-dried powder per vial, for reconstitution with bacteriostatic water; store at 2–8°C.
