Melanotan I is a synthetic linear peptide — thirteen amino acids — modelled on alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), with two substitutions that make it far more stable than the natural hormone. It came out of the same University of Arizona programme in the 1980s as Melanotan II and is known in the literature as afamelanotide. Where Melanotan II is a cyclic analogue that acts across the melanocortin receptor family, Melanotan I is linear and is studied mainly for its action at MC1R, the receptor on pigment cells. It is commonly researched for its role in melanin production and pigmentation, and in photoprotection models. Supplied as 10mg of freeze-dried powder per vial, for reconstitution with bacteriostatic water; store at 2–8°C.
