The compound

What Melanotan 1 Nasal Spray is, in plain English.

Melanotan 1 Nasal Spray contains 10mg of Melanotan 1 per bottle. Melanotan I is a synthetic linear peptide of thirteen amino acids modelled on alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), and is known in the literature as afamelanotide. Its molecular formula is C78H111N21O19, with a molecular weight of about 1,646.8 g/mol and the CAS number 75921-69-6. It keeps the natural hormone's full length and differs from it at two positions: norleucine sits at position 4 and the mirror-image form of phenylalanine at position 7, hence its chemical name, [Nle4, D-Phe7]-α-MSH. Those two substitutions were made to give a more potent analogue of the natural hormone. It came out of the same University of Arizona programme in the 1980s as Melanotan II. Where Melanotan II is a cyclic analogue that acts across the melanocortin receptor family, Melanotan I is linear and binds predominantly to MC1R, the receptor on pigment cells. It is commonly researched for its role in melanin production and pigmentation, and in photoprotection models. It is the better documented of the two in people: the molecule is a licensed medicine in the European Union, since 2015, and in the United States, since 2019, for erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare disorder of severe sensitivity to light. What is supplied here is not that medicine and is not a licensed product. This is the spray format in our Melanotan 1 range; the vial is listed separately at 10mg. Supplied for laboratory research only.
