What SS-31 is, in plain English.
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide — four amino acids — from the Szeto-Schiller family of cell-permeable peptides, and is known in the literature as elamipretide. Its alternating aromatic and basic residues let it cross cell membranes and concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin, the phospholipid that holds the energy-producing electron-transport machinery together. It is commonly researched in models of mitochondrial dysfunction — ageing muscle and heart, ischaemia-reperfusion injury and oxidative stress — where the interest is in how well mitochondria make energy rather than in any single receptor. Supplied as 10mg of freeze-dried powder per vial, for reconstitution with bacteriostatic water; store at 2–8°C.
